From Environment to Circular Economy: Emilia-Romagna’s Sustainable Strategy

Emilia-Romagna confirms its role as one of Italy’s most committed regions to sustainability, with policies and initiatives that actively involve institutions, businesses, and citizens. The regional model combines technological innovation, economic growth, and environmental protection, aiming to build a greener and more inclusive future.

A shared strategy for the future

With the Climate and Work Pact – signed in 2020 by over 50 stakeholders – the Region has outlined a clear path towards carbon neutrality by 2050 and 100% renewable energy by 2035. The document Pathway to Carbon Neutrality before 2050 defines concrete actions for all production sectors, focusing on reducing emissions, creating quality jobs, and tackling inequalities.
In addition, Emilia-Romagna adheres to the UN 2030 Agenda, translating its principles into practical projects that engage local authorities, citizens, businesses, and associations.

Green economy and circular economy

Sustainability is also a driver of economic growth: more than 7,000 green companies operate in the region, employing around 300,000 people and generating revenues exceeding 100 billion euros. These businesses lead in key areas such as waste management, water cycle, renewable energy, and energy efficiency, as well as in traditional industries that have embraced more responsible production models.

Certifications and environmental quality

Emilia-Romagna ranks among the top regions in Italy for environmental, energy, and safety certifications. In recent years, local companies have achieved the national record for EPD-certified products (Environmental Product Declaration). The region also stands out for FSC forest certifications, placing it third in Italy.

Mobility, energy, and smart cities

The sustainable transition is also supported by investments in sustainable mobility, renewable energy technologies, and smart city projects designed to improve service efficiency and enhance citizens’ quality of life. Among the most relevant initiatives are the Integrated Regional Air Plan 2030 (PAIR 2030), with specific measures for sustainable mobility, and the Regional Energy Plan 2030 (PER 2030), which supports the energy transition.
Natural resources are also being enhanced not only for environmental protection but also for tourism, offering a model that combines ethics, nature, and innovation.

Emilia-Romagna positions itself as a true laboratory of best practices, recognized both nationally and internationally - a region that continues to invest with determination in sustainability, making environmental protection a driver of economic and social development.
