Sustainable mobility: Bologna among the world’s most bike-friendly cities in 2025
December 10, 2025
Bologna confirms its position among the world’s most bike-friendly cities, ranking 25th overall and first in Italy in the latest Copenhagenize Index, the leading international benchmark for assessing cycling policies and infrastructure.
The prestigious index evaluates and ranks the 100 most bike-friendly cities worldwide based on 13 indicators, ranging from the quality and reach of cycling infrastructure to actual bicycle use, as well as public policies and institutional support. Criteria include, for example, protected bike lanes, dedicated parking, bike-sharing systems, the spread of cargo bikes, financial investment, and governance models.

Bologna’s results
The list is dominated by European cities, with Utrecht, Copenhagen, Ghent, Amsterdam, and Paris occupying the top five positions. More broadly, the cities featured in the Index are redefining the hierarchy of urban space, reallocating road space on a large scale and systematically using data and monitoring to continuously refine their mobility strategies.
This marks the first time an Italian city has entered the Copenhagenize Index. Bologna makes its debut in 25th place, thanks to the ongoing expansion of its cycling network, the growing number of residents choosing to cycle, and policy measures supporting sustainable mobility, such as the Bologna Città 30 project.
In 2025, cycling mobility in the city recorded a net increase in trips of 22% compared to 2024, confirming a strong and steady growth trend in recent years.
This significant achievement further strengthens Bologna’s position among Europe’s most advanced cities in terms of sustainable mobility and urban quality of life, reinforcing its role as an ideal destination for events with a strong focus on sustainability.
